21 Hyper-G and Gopher

Gerald Mesaric, Klaus Schmaranz

As a second-generation Web system, Hyper-G has been designed to be fully interoperable with Gopher; Hyper-G servers can be accessed by Gopher clients and vice versa.

To provide a migration path from Gopher to Hyper-G, a tool exists to insert any existing Gopher server into a Hyper-G server. Migrating a Gopher server to Hyper-G makes administration easier and adds all the functionality of Hyper-G to Gopher.

The first section of this chapter describes how Hyper-G can deal with existing Gopher servers. Following is a description of the existing Gopher gateway and of all extensions planned for the near future which should allow Hyper-G servers to be accessed as if they were standard Gopher servers. The remainder of this chapter is then dedicated to a migration tool that allows insertion of existing Gopher servers into a Hyper-G server.
