28 Hyper-G and electronic publishing
Klaus Schmaranz
Electronic publishing is booming on the Web these days. In this chapter we give an overview of how Hyper-G can be and already is used for professional electronic publishing on the Web and on CD-ROM.
Hyper-G is designed to meet all requirements of professional electronic publishing by providing stable bidirectional links in all supported document types. It allows you to search for titles, keywords and the contents of documents, or a combination of all three, with user-definable scope. The scope of searches can range from one collection on a single server to all collections on all servers worldwide. The highly sophisticated replication mechanism (see Chapter 10 for details) makes mirroring of documents to other servers easy, helping to keep access and transmission times low for readers. User access control and billing mechanisms are also supported by Hyper-G, features which should appeal to publishing companies who wish to get involved in electronic publishing.
Since not everybody has Internet access yet, it is also important to be able to provide a CD-ROM version of your data and for archival purposes, a printed paper version. Hyper-G supports preparation of multimedia CD-ROMs by using the local Hyper-G database as well as the handling of existing type-setting information used for paper publications. Therefore Hyper-G supports hybrid Web/CD-ROM/paper publications to the maximum extent possible.
