29.1 Hyper-G for teaching, training and support

The saga of trying to use computers for educational purposes goes back well over 30 years. It is a saga of many attempts, few successes and many failures. Before we give a brief review, we want to clarify some terminology used in this book: educational software is called courseware throughout. We understand this term as embracing approaches such as CAI (Computer Assisted Instruction), CBL (Computer Based Learning), CML (Computer Managed Learning), CSL (Computer Supported Learning), TS and ITS (Tutoring Systems and Intelligent Tutoring Systems) and so on, without wanting to go into the sometimes lengthy debates concerning where a particular piece of courseware fits into the maze of acronyms and classifications.
