Abstract

This thesis studies how World Wide Web-based education could finally bring about a breakthrough for computer assisted instruction (CAI). Both CAI and Hypermedia systems are discussed in detail. I show how Hyperwave, a second generation Web server, can supplement Web-based education with important features like user management, hierarchical structured lecture material, annotations, etc. The main focus lies on how to add synchronous communication to Web-based education. Therefore, I have developed a Java applet, the Teleteaching Applet, which allows students to give immediate feedback to their teacher during a Web-based synchronous online lecture.
