21.3 Migration to Hyper-G
The Gopher information system is one of the ``spiritual fathers'' of Hyper-G. Gopher directories are very similar to Hyper-G collections. The hierarchical structure that Gopher provides makes it much easier to migrate from Gopher to Hyper-G than from any other common networked information system.
The original Gopher protocol was simple and easy to implement, but it had one major shortcoming: it did not support additional information about documents. The solution to this problem was the Gopher+ protocol which added meta-information to the basic Gopher system. As with Hyper-G, meta-information is stored separately from the document data. Meta-information in Gopher+ can be converted without loss into Hyper-G object attributes.
