25.3 hifimport and hifexport

For exporting data from and importing data to a Hyper-G server, the special data format HIF (Hyper-G Interchange Format) has been defined. HIF is a human-readable format defining object descriptions, collection hierarchy, anchors and either uuencoded data (documents) or external document data files.

The tools hifexport and hifimport also accept some additional parameters to control the way data is exported from and imported to Hyper-G servers.

According to the design of the HIF format, hifexport and hifimport can be used to mirror data between servers. Also, HIF files can be machine generated from other sources like databases and then used to insert the data into a Hyper-G server (see Appendix E for details on HIF). Machine generation of HIF files from existing databases and then inserting the documents in a Hyper-G server is an easy way to use existing data stored in a local database with all the hyperlink, structure and search possibilities added to it.
