29.5 Hyper-G as a general information system

Our time is often called the ``information era.'' After the industrial revolution, human society is currently undergoing the next radical change, one result of which is that information is generally considered as one of its most valuable goods. Second-generation hypermedia systems such as Hyper-G allow wide access to huge data collections to the general public through worldwide information networks such as the Web. With today' s user interfaces, such infrastructures are no longer restricted to experts but open to the general interested public.

It is impossible to give a comprehensive list of hypermedia applications. However, some main domains of applications can be identified; these include public authorities, business, entertainment, education and training and science. In this chapter we focus on campus information systems as already maintained by many universities all over the world.
