3.6 Further reading

For a good overall introductory text on hypertext and hypermedia, Nielsen's Multimedia and Hypertext: The Internet and Beyond by [Nielsen(1995)] is highly recommended. Nielsen also includes a valuable annotated bibliography with pointers to many of the systems mentioned in Section 3.2. Vannevar Bush's 1945 As We May Think article was reprinted in 1986 [Bush(1986)]. Ted Nelson's definitions of hypertext and hypermedia and his vision of Xanadu are described in his book Computer Lib/Dream Machines [Nelson(1987)]. Hypertext/Hypermedia Handbook [Berk and Devlin(1991)] is an excellent, though somewhat outdated, collection of introductory papers; the glossary at the end of this book should be especially useful to newcomers. Conklin's Conklin87 survey article gives a good introduction to basic principles and an enlightening overview of early systems. A good online starting point is SIGLINK, the ACM Special Interest Group on Hypertext/Hypermedia SIGLINK.
