7.3.2 HotJava Browser

HotJava is a dynamic, extensible WWW browser that shows many of the capabilities of the Java language. Java is a new object-oriented programming language developed at Sun Microsystems to solve a number of problems in modern programming practice. The Java and HotJava products are currently in the alpha stage of development. The primary goal of the alpha release is to demonstrate the concept of executable content and enable WWW software developers to use the Java language to create compelling Web pages.

HotJava is a WWW browser that makes the Internet `come alive'. It builds on the Internet browsing techniques currently implemented in Mosaic or Netscape and expands them by including the capability to add arbritrary behavior, which transforms static data into dynamic applications. Using HotJava, you can add applications that range from interactive science experiments in educational material, to games and specialized shopping applications. You can implement advertising and customized newspapers. There are many possibilities. Another advantage of HotJava is that software transparently migrates across the network. Installation of software is not required. Developers of WWW do not have to worry about whether or not a special piece of software is installed in a user´s system. It gets there automatically.

Java programs, called applets, can be included in any HTML pages, much like an image can be included. When you use the HotJava browser to view a page that contains an applet, the applet's code is transferred to your system and executed by the HotJava browser.
