7.3.5 Spyglass Inc.
Spyglass Inc. was formed in January 1990 by scientists and software engineers from the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois.
A very well known product developed at NCSA is the WWW browser Mosaic. This is a tool that provides point-and-click access to the WWW. Spyglass develops and distributes its Enhanced Mosaic for Windows, Macintosh and XWindows system computers, under a multi-million dollar joint development and master licensing agreement with the University of Illinois . Since forging its Mosaic agreement with the university in May 1994, Spyglass has licensed its technology to 36 companies that incorporate it into over 80 products.
By creating robust, commercially enhanced versions of Mosaic and a broad distribution channel, Spyglass is supporting electronic commerce on the Internet for millions more businesses and individuals.
The Spyglass Browser: Enhanced Mosaic 2.0
Enhanced Mosaic 2.0 from Spyglass is a WWW browser that offers high performance and additional features. Its open, standards-based architecture makes Enhanced Mosaic adaptable to the varied requirements of electronic commerce and publishing. It also ensures that Enhanced Mosaic will continue to push the advancement of WWW technology. Some features of this browser are:
- High performance
No matter what kind of connection you have, Enhanced Mosaic provides the best possible performance by letting you interact with documents during downloads. Text is displayed instantaneously, and it is possible to follow hyperlinks to new locations without waiting for the entire document to arrive. - Client-side image mapping
Image maps or graphical `maps` that follow different hyperlinks according to where you click can be used. Enhanced Mosaic uses an image-mapping technique that does not require server intervention, making image maps useful for CD-ROM and other non-Web applications. - Built-in JPEG and GIF viewer
View, print, and save stand-alone JPEG and GIF images; Enhanced Mosaic automatically recognizes and displays both image file types. - Built-in audio
Listen to AU and AIFF sound files with Enhanced Mosaic's built-in sound players. - Style sheets
Customize how you view the different text elements you encounter on the Web with Enhanced Mosaic's selection of style sheets. - Easy to use toolbar
A toolbar provides quick access to the most frequently used menu commands. - History list
Return to previous destinations on the fly with Enhanced Mosaic's comprehensive history list of recently visited URLs. - Hotlist
Adding favorite Web site URLs to Enhanced Mosaic's hotlist -- once the location is selected from the hotlist, Enhanced Mosaic accesses the URL immediately.
Spyglass WWW Server
The Spyglass WWW Server is a high-performance HTTP engine designed to handle a minimum of 100 simultaneous hits. It is built on an open architecture and conforms to all relevant industry standards. It includes an open interfaces for security, CGI 1.1 scripts, and high performance application interfaces for database and commercial transaction processing. This server will be available for Microsoft Windows NT 3.5, Sun Solaris, DEC OSF/1 and IBM AIX, but Spyglass will not offer the server to end users. Like the Enhanced Mosaic browser, Spyglass licenses the server in large volumes to other companies who add value and integrate the technology in a variety of products. Those products will range from heavy-duty commercial servers to easy to use personal servers.
