Because of the simple nature of HTTP, there are many ``first generation'' WWW servers on the market. During the last few years servers have become more sophisticated with the introduction of CGI scripts. The most recent WWW servers call themselves ``next generation'' WWW servers; they provide features like full-text search, client authentification, secure data transmission, dynamic HTML document creation, automatic link maintenance, etc. Still, these features are an add-on technology to original WWW servers, and thus have inherent some weaknesses, like uni-directional links, no real hierarchical structure, etc. (see Section 3.4).
