The WWW provides a very good means for distance education and particularly for online education. Instead of providing course material statically in a book, it can be presented as a dynamic multimedia document on the WWW. Dynamic processes (chemical or mechanical) can be explained much better using animations, short video clips, or 3D models. Even interactive simulations, which allow students to explore the behavior of processes, are feasible. There is no doubt that the preparation of multimedia course material involves more work for the author, but it is re-usable and can be a real benefit, especially for students who do not have the opportunity to enjoy a real laboratory, a huge benefit.
